What are encapsulated vitamins?

Encapsulated vitamins represent a breakthrough for food and drink fortification as it is now possible to protect nutrients throughout their entire journey, from production facility to consumer consumption.

Xampla has developed this innovation using microcapsule technology, which is essentially a process whereby fat-soluble vitamins are encapsulated inside edible plant protein.

Many vitamins and nutrients are incredibly vulnerable and prone to environmental degradation that can be caused by UV light, PH or heat shock. By encapsulating microscopic droplets of vitamins and nutrients in a plant material, the risk of degradation is decreased.

The protective shell also ensures that the nutrient survives digestion in the stomach, and then released in the small intestine, thus optimising the health benefits for consumers.

This makes it possible to transport fortified products to consumers reducing nutrient degradation – thereby benefitting various consumer use cases both cross-category and with multiple applications and product formats.

Xampla’s microcapsule technology is:

  • Vegan (made from plants)
  • Shelf stable
  • Fortifies vitamins against degradation
  • Edible and digestible, enabling enteric release

And is a high performing, drop-in solution that works with existing manufacturing processes and equipment.

What is Vitamin D?

One of many important vitamins that the human body needs to remain healthy, Vitamin D helps regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate present in the body.

These nutrients are essential to bone and muscle health, and deficiency carries the risk of numerous health conditions. People most at risk of deficiency, especially during winter months, are young children, and the elderly. Dietary supplements are advised for these groups, however there are many ‘good sources’ of vitamin D, such as oily fish, red meat, egg yolk and not least, fortified foods such as spreads, breakfast cereals and drinks.
