What is Maltitol Crystalline?

Maltitol Crystalline is a polyol (or sugar alcohol), and is a great sugar replacement and food ingredient, that is derived from Maltose Syrup. It is hydrogenated, refined and crystalised from the forementioned Maltose Syrup. This produces a white, or off-white, odourless powder.

Maltitol Crystalline and sugar are often used interchangeably, as Maltitol about 90% as sweet, however possesses zero sugar, so therefore is a perfect replacement and is often used in sugar-free or reduced-sugar products, catering to those with diabetes or on low-carb diets. It also has several applications across various industries.

Applications

Some common applications of maltitol crystalline are…

  • Confectionary – Maltitol Crystalline is often used in sugar-free sweets, chocolates, an chewing gum. It provides sweetness and can help to achieve the desired texture of these products without the added calories and increase in blood sugar levels you get from regular sugar.
  • Baked Goods – It can be used in baking to reduce the sugar content in products like cakes, cookies, and pastries. It provides sweetness and moisture retention whilst helping to achieve a similar texture to traditional baked goods.
  • Dairy Products – Maltitol Crystalline can be used in sugar-free or reduced-sugar versions of dairy products such as ice cream and yoghurt, helping to maintain sweetness without increasing sugar content.
  • Pharmaceuticals – Maltitol Crystalline is sometimes used as an excipient in pharmaceutical formulations, in particular chewable tablets. It serves as a sweetener and can enhance the taste and mouthfeel of medications.

Overall, Maltitol Crystalline offers a versatile sugar substitute option for manufacturers looking to reduce the sugar content of their products whilst maintaining sweetness and texture.
