Prepared Mustard
Prepared mustard is the condiment found in jars or squeeze bottles. It’s made by mixing ground mustard seeds with a liquid (such as water, vinegar, or wine) and sometimes other flavourings or spices. They can also be used as ingredients in a variety of products, including sauces, marinades, and dressings.
There are several popular varieties of prepared mustard, including:
- Yellow Mustard: The mildest type, made from yellow mustard seeds, turmeric, and vinegar. It’s commonly used as a condiment for hot dogs and burgers.
- Dijon Mustard: A French-origin mustard made from brown or black mustard seeds and wine, or wine vinegar. It has a smooth texture and a more intense, tangy flavour than yellow mustard. It’s commonly used in vinaigrettes, mayos, and sauces.
- Brown Mustard: Made from coarsely ground brown mustard seeds and often with added spices. It has a strong, spicy flavour and a grainier texture. It is commonly used as a condiment.
- Whole Grain Mustard: Contains whole or partially crushed mustard seeds, giving it a coarser texture and stronger, more pungent flavour. It’s often used in gourmet sandwiches and dressings.
