Beer Styles

Beer being poured.
India Pale Ale (IPA)

An Ale by category, but deserving of a dedicated mention as the champion style of craft brewing. The style was invented in the early 1900’s when extra hops were added to beers shipped to India to avoid spoilage.

Stout in glass.
Stout

In the 1970’s, stout (or porter as it was named before the broader stout category), was popular for it’s dark apperance and strong flavour and functionally did not spoil easily. One of the most well known brands in the world, Guinness, is consumed across the world.

Ale in beer glass.
Lager / Pilsner

The most commonly consumed beer in the world, with a typical alcohol content of 3-6% and a light colour. Most lagers are based upon the original Pilsner Style, pioneered in the German city of Plzeň (Pilsen) in the 1800’s.

Beer tasting tap room.
Ale

Brewed using a warm fermentation method, resulting in a sweet and full-bodied beer with fruity flavour elements. This category incorporates popular styles such as Pale Ale, Cask Ales and India Pale Ale (IPA)

Cyclists and beer.
Low & No Alcohol

While not a style in itself, the alcohol free beer segment of brewing has taken the industry by storm as drinkers conscious about their alcohol and calorie consumption look for alternatives from conventional beers. Here flavouring formulation becomes critical where ethanol has been removed. The category is government defined (see drink aware).
